Isomalt gems

I want to get Diamonds/diamante on a cake like this. This is NOT my cake.
Can I make them from isomalt?
Is Hard plastic or silicon mould better for isomalt?
How far in advance can they be made and how do I store them so they dont go cloudy and dull?
And finally How do I attach to fondant cake so that they still appear clear? Can I use edible glue? Im afraid if i use royal icing then the colour of the royal icing will show through and make them look white?? Mayb im being really stupid here but iv never used isomalt before
Many thanks everyone in advance

Hi Sweetlilly,
Yes you can make them from isomalt. I prefer silicone molds to plastic ones. The best way to store the gems is in an air tight container with a silica gel pack in it. The side that was in the mold will be a little cloudy but the other side will be clear. You can make the gems as early as you like just as long at you keep them in a container.

You can use edible glue to put them on the side of the cake but I just tried piping gel and I found that more effective.

Hopefully I have answered all your questions.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. This is great info. Is there any way to make them shiny again if they are dull? And how long will they keep their shine after they have been put on the cake?
Many thanks
Lisa

Lisa, Your very welcome. PME makes an edible glaze spray that you can use to seal the isomalt to keep it from getting cloudy. I find it is hard to spray the gems though. They move around too much. I am not sure how long they stay shiny on the cake. I have only put then on cake dummies. But I am sure they should last through the event. I have had them on my dummy for 4 months now.

Lisa, you can also use clear hard candy and melt into jewels. A lot less expensive and so much easier. Now the larger broach, you may need to make your own mould for it. I’ve attached a site I’ve used.
