Cake Decorating Business

cancelling an order

have you ever had to cancel an order because the person wouldn’t get back to you? I don’t know what to do :( The last email I had from this person was last Sunday (so almost a week ago) We had confirmed everything, flavour, pick up times etc…. the last email I had asked her if she wanted commercial or marshmallow fondant, to which she never replied. Nothing since. Ive emailed her twice today asking if she wants to go ahead, nothing. Ive said if I don’t hear from you by 3, ill cancel the order. If she doesn’t want to go ahead, that’s fine, but why do people have to be so rude not to actually tell me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone else??? what did you do?

I’m guessing Karen you don’t take a deposit/retainer for your cake orders. Most customers will contact you as they have put money down. But even then, surpisingly , some customers will look around for a “better deal” from another decorator. Yes, definitely rude, but it’s what happens in business. Don’t take it personal… I don’t make cakes to sell, I’m sure others here will weigh in with comments.

Karen I had a customer who had booked 2 months prior to her daughter’s party…and heard absolutely nothing from her for 2 months (after sending numerous emails) she finally called the week of the party…I did make the cake for her but I vowed never to deal with her again! And I have refused her twice! Alot of customers don’t realize the work and time it takes to make decorative cakes!

I started getting deposits for this reason. I think people start pricing cakes and hire you to get the date reserved, find something cheaper with someone else and don’t cancel the original order. I’ve had two this month that did that. So irritating!! They also don’t understand that you could be turning away other business because of their “bogus” order!

Same scenario im afraid. After countless hours spent designing cakes and sending countless emails only for the customer to stop all contact …its a nightmare. We always take a deposit now no matter how small the overall cost. I actually find it helps both the customer and the business owner because both parties now have a financial interest to ensure the cake is perfect!
