Airbrushing Question

A question for all you airbrushing pros…I made a deer antler wedding cake topper from gumpaste. Last night I airbrushed it brown and it turned out too dark. Does anyone have suggestions on how to lighten it up. I have Wilton ivory paste that I am considering trying; but can I dissolve it in vodka and use it in my airbrush (don’t want to risk clogging it up)? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

From my own experience, you cannot lighten it..I tried…. It looked chalky… But in the past I have carefully removed the colour with vodka. In your case, I’m not sure how that would work with the antlers. Sorry I’m not much help. But I’m not the most experienced with the airbrush, still leaning myself

You must never limit your challenges, instead you must challenge your limits

Thanks Calli; that’s good to know as well! I may just test a spot with the vodka on the back side and see what happens:)

Some of the colour could be removed by slightly wetting a small piece of sponge in vodka. Little by little take off some of colour, step back and look at the result. Antlers are not a block colour, removing some of the colour will make light and shade giving a more realistic look. That’s what I did with a cake board which was to look like floor boards.

Thanks amajan! I actually did try this fix and was somewhat successful. I’m happier with the result than I was before. I’ll share the pics once I’ve had a chance to upload them.
Thanks

It tends to depend on what airbrush paints you use. I use dinky doodle airbrush paints and they are different to the water based colours, with those you can wait for the darker colour to dry which is quite instant with these colours then spray over the top with a lighter colour which should take as if you are spraying for the first time. taking it easy so you dont have too much build up in once place. If you have water based colours I am not use about these, but if you contact Dawn Butler of Dinky Doodle usually she is extremely helpful and knowledgeable on airbrushing xx
