Anyone else ever had this kind of luck? I took too

many orders this weekend. Sweet 16 cake 4 doz cake balls, 4 doz custom decorated cookies, a birthday cake. The topped off one more last minute cake… here was the concept a 9×13 sheet cake shared between a teenage boy and a welcome baby girl. ?!? So we decided a teenagers beat up sneaker next to a pristine baby booty. The problem…after 29 hours with no sleep and churning out custom orders I left no time to sculpt the shoes. So I switched to airbrushed graffitti on the teenage side and quilted pink on the baby side….well it would have worked if 15 minutes before delivery the air brush hadnt exploded black all over the cake. I hang my head in shame, I cried, I cursed and I tried to camouflage. Then laughed that I finally had a cake worthy of cake wrecks!!! Feel free to share in my humble amusement. P.s. customer picked it up paid and loved it!! Go figure.

Sweetie if the customer liked it I call that a success. Don’t be so hard on yourself, only you know the ideas in your head you are comparing the result to. The split cake is a bit random but again that’s what the customer wanted. You did great given all you had to cope with <3

Yes if customer was happy..that’s what counts…

Thank you for the kind comments, I have to remind myself to laugh at the little hiccups and keep moving forward to the next cake. ;)

You all are the best! Thanks

Bless your heart! You did the best you could under the circumstances and the customer was happy and that’s what matters. All that stress isn’t good for you though – I hope you’ll consider scaling back your orders. Scrapping design elements and working on cakes minutes before delivery are all signs that you’re taking on too much, and that’s what leads to burnout.

I wish you all the best!

Thank you. I have recently moved from a home/ hobby business to a donut / bakery / cafe. My custom orders are coming in too fast to keep up but we are so indebted we really cant afford to hire more help. I am struggling to find balance and serenity. We are thinking of dropping the “cafe lunches” to focus more on the custom cake orders.

Figure out what makes you the least amount of money and drop that item. I once was complaining about how busy I was and someone I trust very well said “If you’re too busy, you’re not charging enough.” I finally worked up the gumption to raise my prices. I lost some of the budget birthday cakes, but I realized I wasn’t making money on them anyway. Just food for thought…

Great advice. Thank you. It is the extra add on inexpensive last minute birthday cakes that get me. I need to learn to say no. I have an uncanny ability of making other people’s inability to plan my problem.
