Watercolouring

Hi everyone! I have seen so many beautiful cakes that have been done with water colour techniques and am so curious about it. Are people using gel paste mixed with water to dilute it? Or is using airbrush colouring better for watercolouring? Would love any advice on this technique because I definitely want to give it a go :)

It´s a different result. With a brush you can see if you want the brush stroke. And yes gel paste mixed with white alcohol if you want to dry faster.

I use paste’s mixed with vodka or just straight if i am shading, never used an airbrush yet but would love to one day!

I use vodka or lemon extract blended with Americolor gels. I have also purchased Americolor airbrush colors and I like them. (you use them with a standard paint brush and vodka or extract) You don’t have to dilute them as much and the colors are much stronger, more intense. Also, when you dilute the gels you tend to get thick clumps of gel that don’t blend. I like this technique for getting fine details. Just give it a try!

For watercolour effect I use vodka and colour dust or gel. The gel helps it look more translucent, this was done that way … Great medium and remember to let it dry as then you can add more detail . The background was done by simply dry brushing colour onto the icing with a broad brush. Use colour dust xx

Hi,
I use paste colours mixed with water. I use sugarflair colours, but I have used Wilton or lustre dusts. Some gels can be quite translucent, I prefer the more opaque colours, but it is a personal thing. I have a tutorial if you are interested message me

This my first attempt at watercolour using sugar flair colours and water, think I need to water down the colours, still a work in progress d

What beautiful cakes!!!! The Anticipation! It´s all about what do you want, a great contrast with strong colours or a subtle tone. So it´s not abaout good or bad, is about what do you intend to achieve. Like everything is about practicing. Good work!

WOW!!! You are all AMAZING! Such stunning art in these cakes, wow! I really hope I am able to achieve the same thing. I guess my next question would be what sort of paint brushes you would choose to use when watercolouring. I guess I can experiment myself as well. Really love this, thank you so much! <3

Esther, for me, I’m really fussy about my brushes… I use sable hair mostly, but a good quality taflon brush works well too. I use all kinds of brush shapes, blunt, rounded, pointed and long length, it all depends on what is being painted x
