Hi Samantha ! It would very much depend on the design of the cake … Have a play on Google and search Youtube and Pinterest for some great tutorials if you know what it is your wanting to sculpt. You can always have a browse through the tutorials section on here too … xx

yeah i have… I want to make a 3d sully from monsters inc. but Im nerves because I most likely wont be delivering it and I have never built a structure for such a cake yet. plus it would be butter cream wich scares me more. lol and its summer in fl! eek

I would just carve the basic shape from stacked round cakes and use some internal support between the layers, and use rice krispie treats for the arms and legs … Piping the fur I would use a grass nozzle, and then fondant for the details. Have a look for some of the 3D cookie monster or teddy bear cakes as an example to start you off … As for buttercream in one of your summers, someone else would have to give you tips ;)
This is one I did a while ago now, so not the best, but this was made from 2×8″ and 1×6″ rounds, with the off-cuts mixed with ganache and used for the extra shaping … Hope that helps a little ? x
