Using Sparkling Sugar on Buttercream Cake

Forum: Cakes & Cake Decorating

I’ve been asked to do a 2-Tier Bridal Shower cake covered completely with sparkling sugar. I was thinking of putting the cake inside a large box and using my hand, cover the sides and top of the cake with the sugar.

Do any of you have a better (and probably less messy) way of doing this? I welcome all suggestions.

I covered a dummy cake with coloured sprinkles DJ…and there were sprinkles everywhere!! I did put a old towel on the floor anticipating a mess. I’ve never actually done sprinkles or sparkling sugar on bc cake, except for a very small area. I hope someone here can give you some good hints. Either way, think it’s going to be messy. Unavoidable hazard.

Thank you, jchuck… I can just imagine the mess that’s why I think I will find a big box – at least I’ll contain the sugar – for some reason I haven’t been able to find anything on the web regarding this topic. It must not be very popular – LOL!

Hey DJ
Had a few minutes, so I googled applying sprinkles, not sugar, to your cake. Here’s a couple I found:

Here is one on sparkling/sanding sugar:

Hope these help. :o)

Hey @jchuck that was a lovely link. I have never tried sprinkles, but I will soon try sprinkles on my cake. Thank you so much for the link.
