covering wires with fondant

Hello has any one covered wires with fondant, so that I then can curl them in either spirals or curls for a wedding cake, any thoughts or suggestions.

I have covered wires with gumpaste before by “twiddling/twisting” onto the wire during flower making but not for curling, depends on what final look you are going for. Try a few experiments with different methods to get the result you need. You can also twist florist tape and curl it. Good luck – post the cake when done :)

I tried twisting fondant round a curved piece of florists wire to make a handle and it just didn’t work – the fondant just kept breaking, eventually I encased the wire in fondant and put some markings on it which looked ok, but was still extremely fiddly. I didn’t use any glue – I don’t know if that would have been more successful.
Good luck, I’m keen to know if you manage and then maybe you could pass some tips on :-)
I wonder if modelling chocolate might work better? It’s not something I’ve tried.

we got to cover wire with fondant before, shaped it first to the way we needed it to then covered it with fondant. We brushed it lightly with water to stick to the wire. Gently pressed it to itself to seal. it was the first time we got to do it so i think it pretty much needed more polishing but the couple of the cake loved it. Also we wrapped the part of the wire that will be inserted onto the cake with parchment paper. I guess you can wrap it also with foil.
