Cake decorating parties

Hey everyone! So my daughters 12th birthday just passed and for her party she invited over 4 friends and we all decorated cakes together. Each girl got a 6" round, 3" high cake already ganached. We started with a cake design on paper then I instructed them through rolling out and covering with fondant, and some ways to decorate. Because it was for my daughter I kind of then let them loose with all my tools and just helped when they asked/needed it… if it was actually for a client I would probably do something more structured and in a theme. Just wondering anyones thoughts on these types of party packages, what you think pricing something like this would entail or how to figure it out… or if anyone does them, advice? direction? I had a lot of fun and really enjoy working with children (have 4 of my own, have a GIGANTIC family and have done daycare in the past, so lots of experience with kids you might say lol)

Thanks in advance everyone!!!

Wow! that sounds like a very cool party theme! I have on several occasions decorated cupcakes with a local ‘after-school’ program with about 20 7-10 year olds. It is such a blast; I love seeing the excitement in the kids’ faces and watch their imagination bloom! Just the other week we made ‘bunny bottoms’ (not allowed to call them butts in school!) with fondant. They loved it and I so enjoyed it too! I’m a hobby baker so I do it just for fun; but that sounds like a wonderful service to provide and I can definitely see a market for it in any demographic area!

thanks Chris, I love your input! 20 kids and working with sugar… bet that gets loud :)

It sure does; but I had 2 other teachers to assist with the noise control:)

I think it’s a great idea – just googled “cake decorating parties for children” and loads came up with all sorts of pricing structures. So might be worth you doing this and having a browse, and possible getting advice from one or two? Another thought is that if you are offering this service it might be worth you getting in touch with your local council for advice as there may be a need to be CRB checked or similar and also health and safety implications? I go every year to my daughter’s school where she is a teacher and spend the day with 30 5/6 year olds decorating biscuits for Christmas – great fun! I had to be CRB checked before I could do this which is where my thought came from. Sorry just realised you are in Canada so not sure how things work over there! CRB checks are basically security checks to make sure that a person working with children is “safe” and has no criminal record regarding offences against children etc.

THanks Judy, have done regular CRB checks for childcare, but probably do need a current one done, its been a couple years since my last one. Also preparing for an exam to become an actual certified food handler so I can be “qualified” to prepare food anywhere :) definitely going to give google some of my time for some research… glad everyone thinks its a fun idea though! And you guys have positive experience working with sugared up kids, lol

Group cake decoration sounds fun. Never thought about such issues though! Lol
