Cake Decorating

Entering a local show

Hi everyone,

Im new to Cakes Decor and this is my first forum topic so please forgive me if this has been asked a thousand times before.

There’s a spring fair in town next weekend and they have a cake baking competition. I thought it might be fun to make something, but since I’ve only been baking & decorating since the start of the year I was doubting whether I should enter. I finally bit the bullet and sent in my entry form so there’s no going back now. Since I’ve never entered one of these competitions, I’m wondering if people will be going big and submitting masterpieces, or going for something simply decorated. It’s kinda like when you go to a party – you don’t want to be under-dressed or over-dressed. Any tips would be much appreciated :)

There are always both at competitions and the over the top ones don’t always win. There are many criteria that the judges have. My suggestion is do what you feel comfortable with because then you will be able to execute it so much better than just a big cake to impress.

Thanks so much Jennifer, I think I will go with what I know and feel comfortable with. Maybe just a little 2 tier number that’s not too over the top. The only rules were that no packet mixes can be used so that leaves everything else wide open. Fingers crossed I go ok!

Jennifer’s advise is perfect, I agree completely. Also, if you can do some homework on Google or local papers which might be accesses at the library you might be able to see what the last competition winners work was like, and what type of cakes were entered. Have fun xx

Great idea Karen, I didn’t think about looking for past competition winners. Thanks for your advice and I will try and have fun – and not be too nervous! :)

I agree with Jennifer, you don’t want to do anything that is too crazy, keep to something your
familiar with and create a clean presentable cake. In my opinion clean work is always a winner in my eyes,
you can really see how hard someone has worked on it.

Good Luck Caroline!! Xx

Thanks for your help everyone – the competition was today and I won 1st prize!! There were some other great looking cakes but apparently they were a little dry so mine won on looks and taste. Beyond excited!!

Congratulations. I am so happy for you! Did you happen to post a pic of the cake? Would love to see what you ended up creating.

Thanks PrimaCakesPlus, it was just a small local spring fair and had about 15 cakes in the competition. Felt confident entering there since it wasn’t a massive show and as a newbie it was less daunting. I’m not sure how to attach the pic here so I’m just about to add it to the gallery. Thanks again :)

Small or big it is a great accomplishment and we all need to start somewhere! I will keep my eye out for it. :)
