This is adorable! I just finished three layers of a six layer rainbow cake, my first. I must admit the blue, purple and green scare me a little! I am not accustomed to dark colors for cake! LOL!

Thanks Toni and Sandra. Sandra I haven’t tried a full rainbow cake but have done rainbow layered cupcakes. They turned out really cute. I want to try the lumberjack plaid cake one of these days. Had a friend who tried it recently and she said it was a fail but may have been because her cake was too light in weight.

The lumberjack cake is on my list too! It is so cute. I recently made a NASCAR cake that was black and white checked on the inside and it turned out perfectly, much to my surprise and relief! If found it fairly easy to do.

Sandra, did you get pictures of the NASCAR cake when it was cut?

Yes, not the best, but you could see that it looks nice. If they had cut a full wedge, it would have shown up better.

It looks great. Did you use the checkerboard cake pan set to make it?

No, I scrounged around until I found a saucer or cup (whatever works) in the right diameter and cut the rings from the four tiers. The only tricky part was transferring the rings. I had a couple to break, but it is really easy to patch with left over cake trimmings.

Good work Sandra. My friend Kathy made the lumberjack cake and her rings fell apart. She thought it was because her cake recipe was too light to hold the weight.

I used the WASC and the chocolate version recipes and they are pretty sturdy, but really moist and good.

Someone told me the WASC recipe isn’t working as well for them because the companies have lowered the amount of mix in a box. Did you find that to be so?

I’ve done it both ways, Shirley – made exactly as the recipe calls for using two cake mixes plus about 1/3 of a third box and I’ve also made it just using two cake mixes. Both worked well, but if you want a sturdier cake, try adding about 2/3 of a cup of mix from a third box.
