Hmm I will have to follow this because I am interested in what others will suggest because my first instinct was Isomalt but you say you can’t get that where you are.

Do you have access to clear corn syrup?? You mix I cup white sugar, 1/2 cup clear corn syrup. Heat in a large glass measuring cup in the micro till combined. A minute or two. Stir with a metal spatula to make sure sugar & corn syrup are mixed. Pop back into micro for 30 seconds or so. Use a heat proof glass bowl, the shape you want for the fish bowl, to pour the mixture into. Make absolutely sure the bowl you use is heat proof, or it will crack, or worse, shatter from the heat of this mixture. Be careful, the mixture will be VERY HOT!!!! Pour in quickly, but slowly as to not create too many air bubbles and leave to set. Will become hard in about 5-10 min.
Hope this helps and you can understand my instructions.

Super suggestion June! I wouldn’t have thought of that one!!
c3heaven – that should work perfectly – almost the same as isomalt! Can’t wait to see how it turns out for you:)

Chris

Chris, I use to make micro peanut brittle all the time. I needed a pond for my sons ice skate cake. I thought…who needs Isomalt??? I’ll just make peanut brittle…skip the peanuts…skip the baking soda…wa la…liquid sugar to make in any shape!! Nice to have some old experiences to help someone….. :o)

I am wondering how you would get the fish inside………… :-)

Julia Hardy

My guess Julia is simply use gelatine. Pour gelatine into the bowl, and before it fully sets up….you pop in your gumpaste fish.

Very clever – I must remember all this for future use :-)

I made a cat in the hat cake and to make the fish and the bowl, I melted some clear mints in the oven ( takes just a few minutes to melt on a piece of parchment paper ) and placed it over a small bowl shape that I lightly sprayed with Pam cooking spray until set. Carefully remove once cooled and attach to cake. Make your fish put of fondant an place in bowl. I think I have a picture of this cake on my page here. Good luck!

Good idea….
