I havent seen a tutorial to recommend… But I’d have a go at shaping RKT… You could even (maybe perhaps!), line a coffee cup/mug with glad wrap and pack the RKT into it, as much as u can – really firm like, so it takes the shape… Then when u pull it out, u have the perfect base to then ganache and cover with fondant. Maybe!

I agree with Mardie. Using a mug you have is a great idea, and RKT works great to form shapes. I made a teacup and saucer out of gumpaste by coating the inside of a teacup with a ton of vegetable shortening and then pressed the gumpaste into the cup. I hollowed it out by just pressing it into the bottom and then up the sides to the top. I left the gumpaste on the bottom of the cup a bit thicker, thought it might give it some weight (and if it was going to stick at all, something I could try to grab onto to get it out). I let it set-up for awhile (I’m not sure how long exactly) and when it felt like it wouldn’t fall apart if I removed it, I then took it out and let it dry. For the saucer I used the largest circle cutter I had and then placed it on top of a real saucer (with a bit of cornstarch sprinkled onto it). Once it had dried out pretty well, I removed it and let it finish drying. The only thing is that if you wanted to paint on the teacup, you would want to try to get as much of the shortening off first. To make your life even easier, you could just press the gumpaste/fondant into the cup like you would with the RKT, not worrying about it being hollow. It will just take longer to dry out.

I hope that helps, if you have any questions, send me a message. Maybe I’ll try making a tutorial for it one day. eek
good luck, you’ll have to let us know how it goes.

I used gum paste for the cups and saucers I used for my ‘Garden Tea Party’ Cake. I made a paper template of the inside of the cup (the sides only) then I cut out a small circle out of gum paste for the bottom and attached it to the cup once it was dry! Hope this helps!!

Wow, thank you all soooo much for taking the time to give me all your guidance & hints/tips…can I ask just one last questions please :) Is there an advantage in using one medium over another?? Thank you all once again for your help., so much appreciated. Jen

I think it’s personal preference really. If you make it out of gumpaste, it’s technically edible, but wouldn’t be pleasant to eat after hardening! I could be kept as a keepsake afterwards though.
Using the RKT someone would be able to eat it, you just have a few more steps in order to cover it.

Thanks once again for all your input guys, so much appreciated. Will give both ideas a go I think & see what works best for me, although I believe that anything made with RKT cannot be made too far in advance?? So that would be a negative I guess, but if its easier & quicker to do than using gumpaste/fondant, then it kinda makes up for it…..anywayl will try all methods suggested & see what works best,,,thanks very much once
again :)

PS. Nicole thanks especially to you for all your input, will definitely try your suggestions.

Anytime! Let us know how it goes. Good luck. :)

Hi Jennifer, Few years ago I made a tutorial on making a tuscan bowl , it would be similar to making a teapot/mug/saucer. I have a step by step photo and instructions and everything was made from gumpaste. If you are interested to view it, here is the link - Hope this helps too…

Hi Joanne, so sorry for the late reply….just wanted to say thanks for the link to your tutuorial, fantastic! Thank you so much once again.

Just to add to the conversation, if you leave the margarine out of the RKT recipe it will keep much longer. I made a display cake using RKTs for some bansai tree “branches”. They’re all covered with modeling chocolate, so I have no idea what the RKTs look like under the modeling chocolate – but it has been well over a year and the cake still looks like it did on day one. I certainly wouldn’t eat it now, but you could still keep it as a keepsake.
