Here’s an example of what I’m talking about: http://cakesdecor.com/cakes/50137

I’m curious too. I thought you might be referring to gold or silver leaf until I looked at the photo and I’m not sure what that is. I’ve never been able to paint on luster dust to create such a look so I’m wondering what that is too. Good question.

Wish someone would answer this. I could really use the info, I need super gold on one of my cakes!

It may just be that she airbrushed the metallic luster on. The cake came from here – did you try sending a PM to the baker that made the cake? She could tell you 100% hoe she did it.

A local cake supply store where I live sells gold and silver like that but it is NOT edible. However, I have seen the same gold/silver on cakes done with airbrush, so it is edible. That is one reason I want an airbrush machine! :-)

Here is what my local store sells, it’s Justthinkcake.com if you wanted to order some :-)

Opps! , forgot the picture….:-)

If you mix the gold dust with vegetable oil the look is more vibrant. PME sells an edible gold/silver spray paint as well, it gives you the lustrous sheen and it has a delicious vanilla smell to it.

I bought some silver and gold glaze, it’s edible and produces a very rich color. So do airbrush colors like mentioned above. Viva La Sugar Cake has a great tutorial on her blog for using luster dust on her cakes, it’s not quite as rich but she’s very talented.

hi from france :)
I was able to notice that the choice of the fondant base color was important, the gold is more realistic when it is painted on the brown and the silver on the black (or a grey for a light siver).
For an optimal result the ideal is to spend several coats of spray, while waiting for the complete drying between every coats.

If you use a Prevail Sprayer and mix luster dust & clear alcohol (vodka) you’ll get that deep gold/silver color in one pass or airbrush the pieces one coat at a time ….

you can get them on amazon.com

could it be something like “gold highlighter”? I’ve used this before, playing around on small pieces and it looks similar.

Yes, it’s Highlighter Gold and Highlighter Silver. You mix it with vodka or lemon extract. I bought them at Global Sugar Arts.

I don’t have a problem, the mix should be a little thick and the fondant has to be dry. On the other hand, I bought the glaze and it doesn’t cover as well. It’s guey. It works for me when I cover very small areas like on flowers. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

I get this effect by mixing rose spirit or lemon extract with gold or silver lustre dust to make a paint and then applying it with a soft flat brush :)

Can I brush on airbrush colors? I need a light gold. I saw a video about brushing Crisco on the cakes & then the lustre dust. I do have edible golds but not a white one which I need for 2 tiers. I was going to do the gold on ivory but thinking maybe it should be white. I’m afraid of my airbrush machine plus I do cakes in my house and don’t want the mess. I try to buy only the edibles now & save my old dusts for dusting flowers.

Hi Jazz
I use TruColor natural airbrush colors (mixed with a bit of water) and I paint them on with a brush rather than using the airbrush for pretty much the same reasons as you :) I also use Magic color edible gold dust that I also paint on after mixing with lemon or orange extract.

Many years ago I was told to add a bit of Super Pearl luster dust to either gold or silver luster dust, then thin with vodka or Everclear. It does make metallics exra shiny and bright. As for edible, the only brand I have seen is from Australia and I am not sure it passes U.S. requirements.

Thanks! I’ll roll some fondant out ahead to dry and then paint and see what happens. I can’t remember the brand of airbrush colors I have but I have painted little things with it. I never thought of adding water. I have vodka and Everclear so I’ll try those. I’m not even sure if she want the painted look now. Stay tuned! lol
