Signature Technique

Do you have a “Signature Technique”? Well I have decided to give myself one. Not that I make a lot of cakes, (although one day I would like to.) As an emerging cake decorator and blogger I have been engaged in some cake self reflection of late.

Looking back at my cakes this year I’d say a key element that has been my turning point has to be my coloured ganache.

When I first used it, I created some excitement with other cakers around the world. Gosh it has been my highest ever blog post, I received more traffic in one day that I would normally do over 2 months! I never imagined that my laziness would get people excited. Yes that’s right! Laziness! I experimented with coloured ganache because I often fight with fondant and desperately needed an alternative.

I love using this stuff and although it’s not used in every cake I do, it’s fast becoming my thing! My medium I am most comfortable with. Sure I have some perfecting to do but it excites me to take ownership of my creative elements.

Some cake artists use paints, others make incredible flowers, and then some even have a certain character that follows through each modeling… you see it in your favorite artists too don’t you? They all have a special signature that you “just know” that’s theirs.

So today I am naming Coloured Ganache as my signature. (It might also be you yours too!)

What is your signature?

One day I’m going to try your colored ganache. I love this idea. It is a great alternative to fondant and even to buttercream that people might think is too sweet. And if it’s dark chocolate ganache it’s healthy too right???

Oh Melanie Dark Chocolate is full of fabulous antioxidants – definitely healthy! And it makes the perfect black ganache! Just add black gel and voilà you have a perfectly smooth black – not being ruined by my over zealous cornflour application because it’s so humid here!

Naomi, your coloured ganache looks fantastic…
I don’t know if I have a definite signature.
Increasingly, I like to combine airbrush and handpainting together, in my designs…with strong Australian themes/influences. ♥

Julez when I think of you it’s definitely those techniques and your Aussie character. I love that about you x

What a great topic! Love your coloured ganache, the colours are so vivid. If I could do every cake in my own style (free reign on design) it would be awesome as I feel my own designs are defineatly the best, and are the ones I most enjoy doing. So if I was to define my signature style it would be freehand drawing and painting on a cake.

I’ve found my niche to be flowers made from clay craft clay. Starting to get good at it…so either the flowers on there own, or on cakes…it’s part of my “signature.”

Ok…I’m kind of sad reading all your comments. I’m trying to think of “my signature” and not coming up with anything. Nada… Now I’m going to be awake all night trying to think of something. ;)

Kath yes I am lucky in that way that I am only a hobby baker and mainly only make cakes for my family or fir friends as their birthday gift so I get free reign. I agree, I admire your free hand drawings and look forward to seeing more.

June I have been watching your lovely flowers made from clay on here ♡ Do you ever play wirh gumpaste the same way or just prefer clay?

Sharon it’s only last night I decided to bestow myself a “signature” and that was after reflecting on my pattern, what first comes to mind when you plan a cake? Mine is almost always what colour and can I pull it off with ganache?
