OMG…. incredible!! I am still to nervous to attempt carving a cake….lol!!! One of these days I will attempt it.

I do have a question for you……..the blue & black pieces that are standing straight up, how did you get them to harden up to stay. I tried, tried, and retried with a cake that I had a piece that was suppose to stand straight up (it was a barbie head silhouette)………well needless to say that after about 12 attempts, I finally went and bought a piece of foam-board and used that!!! I was so upset……but I had no choice, and no more time!!!! I was attempting at making this piece for over a week. Client was absolutely ok with it (she could not believe all the broken, unharden, cracked, etc pieces I had laying around, and said she would not have attempted it so many times :-) …….but I sure was not. I hope you don’t mind telling me what and how you made these pieces. Thank you so much.

Love it! Amazing colors! Your so talented!

Sugar and spice, and everything nice!

I really do’t have any words…You are a Great Talent!!!

Thanks Speedy92, I’m always happy to share anything I know, because more than likely someone has shared it with me first! :) I added double the amount of tylose than I usually would then I actually rolled the fondant much thicker than I normally would. let the cut out shapes sit for about 10 mins on a piece of paper towels as I find baking paper slows the drying. Then I gently pushed a thin wire into each end of the main blue piece. I let that sit for another 10mins and then while it was still flexible, put water along the base and pushed it into the cake! I’ve never done it this way before, I usually let all the pieces dry first, but I knew it had to bend to the contour of the cake. It stayed surprisingly well, but to add stability, I then attached the black pieces to it to anchor it in place. To my surprise they were rock-solid! I was really learning as I go…or as I like to say, flying by the seat of my pants! ;) Hope that helps :) xxx

Thank you so much for responding to my request about the fondant pieces!! I just looked through the rest of your pictures………..what great work you do!!! Hopefully I will be as great one day. My cake was already delivered but my “virgo” self…………I am going to attempt it one more time following your instructions and see what happens!!! BTW…….what brand fondant do you use, someone told me (not sure how much truth there is in it), that it depends on the brand of fondant whether it completely dries hard or not? Do you know if that is true?

Super-dooper awesome! I love it so much Raewyn and the your finish is impeccable! Great tips for the large fondant accents – I frequently fly by the seat of my pants too but usually with not quite such an impressive outcome. Love your work x

Hi Speedy92, thanks for saying that, but you will be surprised at how quickly you master things if you watch all the fabulous free tutorials and the advice that all the wonderful cakers give like Peggy Does Cake, Lesley at Royal Bakery, Way Beyond Cakes by Mayen and especially Michelle Rea from Inspired by Michelle. They all give so generously of their time and knowledge and have been so helpful and encouraging in the year I have been caking. I find now my biggest issue is confidence, it can stop me in my tracks. I was so close to just making Mark an iphone cake as I was really nervous about attempting the Dragon. I couldn’t find any help online so for the first time really had to wing it….SO glad I did lol!
I use Bakels fondant which is fantastic for our climate here in Australia, I love it. I have tried Satin Ice and Cake Art. I know these are hugely popular brands in other parts of the world but I found them horrible in our humidity. They were sticky and soft and tore everytime I tried to lift it onto the cake. They also got ‘elephant skin’ I couldn’t wait to see the back of them. I found that they took forever to dry if at all. I think it’s just trial and error to find which suits you and your climate best. Let me know how you go. Do you have a facebook page? :) xxx
