POP Out Dave the MINION!!

POP Out Dave the MINION!!

My first Minion cake and he was surprisingly fun to make! This is for the brother of the recipient of the Monster High cake I just posted. It is loosely based on two cakes the mother sent me photos of. She wanted the “popping out” effect like the one by Cakes with L.O.V.E. but the expression like that of the one by Rachel Manning Cakes. This is my take on combining the two. The board is dressed with the steel plate pattern which I’ve seen on many cakes but can’t remember which ones now.

One big thing I learned from all you great decorators here on CD is that a dressed board makes a HUGE difference in the overall presentation. I never gave it much thought before but noticed that many of MY favourite designs had great boards. So my new policy is to have a dressed/covered board for every cake unless they don’t want it.

Isn’t he SO cute? He is supposed to be licking his chops and staring at a banana just in front of him but I ran out of time and could not finish it. The design was originally meant to include just a toy banana but I wanted to make one out of fondant for my photos and was planning to include it as a surprise for the client. Luckily, I did not tell the mother I was going to include a fondant one, so she had already bought the toy one.

He is super cute Violet! Love the “popping out” effect! I might have to try it sometime. He has the most adorable expression on his face. I agree, a “dressed” board really makes a difference with presentation. If I can’t cover it with fondant, I at least use scrapbook paper covered in contact paper. Love the steel plate pattern on the board.
