I follow Miss Cakehead on facebook – a UK based PR genius who uses food – and a lot of cake – in her promotional work. She has some pretty amazing cakers on board with her who she works with on both paid jobs and causes. This year she started the Depressed Cake Shop as a way of raising awareness and funds for mental health. As far as I know, I’m the first in Australia to get a Depressed Cake Shop underway (please correct me if I’m wrong, would love to see what else has been happening here!), working with our local Suicide Prevention Group during Mental Health Week in October. We gathered some volunteers and had a make and bake day (supplies kindly donated by local Centacare), got some information out by radio, newspaper, social media and on 10 October, set up our pop up shop in Gloria Jeans Coffees, Kingaroy. These pics are just my own goodies, there were plenty of other things on offer. The idea behind it to to get people talking about mental health and removing the stigma or taboo about this health issue. I could go on and on as it’s been an eye opener for me! Google Depressed Cake Shop for info – great cause – great cake – fun and worthy :-)
