Sweet Southern Flowers

Sweet Southern Flowers

My husband has a big family reunion every two years in Hostyn, TX at a church with all of his Grandmother’s siblings and their families. This year I offered to do the cake and was leaning towards a sheet cake with maybe a tree on it. When my husband asked me to “knock it out of the park” for his Grandmother, who was I to refuse? He wanted her favorite southern flowers on it; gardenias and magnolias. I also added some hydrangea and some small blossoms and buds. The bottom tier is a 10" double chocolate chip three layer cake with fudge/caramel filling. The top tier is a 6" three layer French vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream filling. To decorate it, I used a diagonal ombre petal technique in different shades of blue to match the hydrangea and the lettering on the cake board. The family did not want to cut the cake but was very happy when they did, there were no leftovers. It really was a big hit.
