We'll gather Lilacs

We'll gather Lilacs
We'll gather Lilacs We'll gather Lilacs We'll gather Lilacs We'll gather Lilacs

Well I don’t have to tell you who this cake’s for………She’s 81 on Thursday, she’s living with me now because her Alzheimer’s means she needs extra help. Some days I think it’s me she driving me mad………but I wouldn’t change that for the world.

The cakes rich fruit, which is her favourite, and decorated with Lilacs (because Purple is her favourite colour), and the song “We’ll gather Lilacs” came to mind to me, which she likes. She also likes “Rockin all over the world” by Status Quo too……….!!!
There’s Roses and Hydrangea’s on the top too. She’s been watching me decorate it today, and must have asked me 100 times how I came to find I could do this. But when she told me she was so privileged to have a Daughter that was so talented I nearly burst with happiness. We all want our Parents to be proud of us, but I know in time she might not even know who I am, so hearing her say that today will stay in my heart for ever.

Happy Birthday Mum xxx

Karen, what a lovely cake and you must have a great heart to be taking care of your mom who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. I personally know how hard it could be as I recently lost my mother-in-law to this disease at 88 and my father-in-law, who is 95, is going through that too! So, NOT easy!

This is so gorgeous Karen! I’m so sorry that your Mom has Alzheimer’s. My 87 year old Mother in Law lives with me, and it can be quite trying at times, and she is of sound mind. Bless you for taking your Mother in. You will never regret this commitment.

Thank you ladies, there are so many people with this disease today. I’m doing my best to make what time we have together happy, and building memories for the future. Sometimes when I’m tired I think I’ve made a big mistake, but mostly I feel lucky to be able to do this for her. We sometimes cry together, but mostly we laugh. And although she may be “loosing her mind”, she’s not forgotten her sense of humour. xx

Karen, I’m so sorry about your mom. Can’t even imagine how tough it must be for you to see your mom like this. The cake is gorgeous and one can certainly see the thought & love that went into making it.

Thank you Goreti xx I’m beginning to think that Alzheimer’s is actually a blessing rather than a curse. In my Mum’s case she’s totally oblivious to how much she’s loosing. She’s hanging on to all her yesterdays, but I’m hanging on to all our todays…….. while we still have them.

I want to say a massive thank you to all my friends at cakesdecor. You can’t hope to understand how much this site means to me. It’s given me such a lift to see everyone’s amazing work. And the kind comments and encouragement I’ve received from everyone who have posted such lovely comments about my cakes have spurred me on to push and challenge myself. The cakes I’m producing now are miles away from the first cakes I made 2ys ago. After a tough day all I want to do is see what’s new on this site. I really think without you all in my life I wouldn’t be able to face those days so easily. THANK YOU XXX

So sorry to hear about your Mom. I’ve had several family members with Alzheimer’s so I know what you are dealing with. Many days are hard but there are many happy times too. Enjoy the time you have with your Mom while you can. Your cake is just beautiful and your Mom is right she has a very talented daughter! I love the lilacs! My Mom loved lilacs too!

Thank you Ellie, for your wise words, and kind comments. They mean a lot to me :)
