It can be said that I don’t do things by halves. For my daughter’s 4th birthday I decided to attempt a two-tier Wizard of Oz cake as it’s her favourite film and loves to dress up in her ruby slippers and pretend to be Dorothy.

However, I have only ever done two large iced cakes before this, but I had in my mind exactly what I wanted to do.

It didn’t turn out exactly the same as the one in my head but she loved it anyway and as long as you don’t look at it too closely I think it’s OK.

The icing cracked a lot as I was decorating it which I welcome feedback on. I have started to use Trex instead of icing when rolling out the icing to see whether it cracked because it was too dry.

The bottom tier had the characters’ faces round the outside; the scarecrow, Dorothy, the tin man and the lion. There was the wicked witch of the west’s hat and the wicked witch of the east being squashed by the house. The yellow brick road led up to the snowy poppy field white top tier where the rainbow in the clouds towered over the ruby slippers. I have since found an amazing tutorial for making a rainbow here on Cakes Decor and only wish I had found it before I made this as it looks so amateur.

Toto caused a few problems though. My attempt looked more like a bear and just as I finished the other half looked quizzically and asked if that was going on the cake. His tone clearly implied that this sorry excuse for a dog just wouldn’t cut it. I asked him to help and he crafted a rather cute incarnation of Toto even if he did look more like a sausage dog. When babypuddleduck woke up on her birthday morning and saw the finished cake, her first exclamation was “is that Toto? It doesn’t look like Toto. It’s not very good is it!”. After that I felt we had to keep him!

As ever I welcome feedback and tips on how I could improve but please don’t be too harsh as I am only a beginner!
