The bottom two tiers of the cake are actually cake dummies; the top tier is chocolate cake/chocolate buttercream. The dragon and phoenix are hand sculpted from gum paste and then painted with edible gold paint. The dragon head alone was over 5 hours of work. The accompanying 225 cupcakes were for the guests and are topped with fondant rounds stamped with the “double happiness” Chinese symbol.

Amazing art work. You should be proud of your beautiful cake. I hope you were paid handsomely for it! Nice work!

Psalm 127:1 Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain.

Thank you both! This is my favorite cake that I’ve made so far.

@Tokazodo: for this particular project, I was paid for my supplies but traded my time with the groom for him to redo my website. Well, that still hasn’t happened and their wedding was in April. Oh well! Maybe it will happen one day… :)

Aloha BlissBakery~ Don’t be afraid to drop the newlyweds a note or email saying how much you enjoyed creating their cake [awesome work], and you have had time to think of some of the things you need to do to upgrade your website. & are looking forward to working with him(them) on it. A little reminder doesn’t hurt & that 1st yr can be rough…. I have traded cakes successfully for; mechanic work on my truck (actually ongoing trade~she gets cake for life, I keep my truck running), a black walnut shot glass display case (holds 60), an Ijoy massage chair & accounting services to help me start a legit business, among other things. Dont give up yet! trades can be great

Hi 808SugarWorks! They have had a very busy year and I have been in absolutely no hurry to get my website done. I was very clear about that when we first started talking about doing a trade and have had a “it will happen when it happens” attitude about it. I’ve been in touch with him and it looks like my website should be done by the end of this month. Perfect timing too since I’m just now putting more effort into my business after taking a bit of a break from that side of things. You’re absolutely right— trades are awesome!

At the end of the day, I am really proud of this cake. I was very nervous about making the figures since I had never sculpted anything this detailed before out of any medium. I loved how the figures turned out and I really loved the cupcake display. The experience was great and they were both extremely appreciative and complimentary (and shocked too since I was able to pull this off with only about 6 or 7 weeks of planning). :)
