This is our piece (made by me and my husband) for Couture Cakers International 2019
All the pieces of the traditional Romanian garb are hand made.
The traditional garb of the women from Maramures area, through its main elements, integrates in the general structure of the traditional Romanian garb. In the past, the models and color pallet were preserved by each community, making them specific to that area, and through which different messages were sent via symbols. As such, only the married women had their head covered with a flowery kerchief (black for the older ladies). The shirt differs by subareas and by age.
The main identification elements were “zadiile” (zadia is a wholl woven in the traditional women garb in some areas, decorated with wide black stripes, alternated with other colors (red and black, orange and black, yellow and black, blue and black). The stripes differ in width and chromatic, varying depending on the village.
“opinci” (sandals): traditional type of footwear made of leather strapped with leather laces, worn by both men and women, regardless of the season. They were not only an integral part of the traditional garb, but they were also always worn at war.
