- I made this cake for my granddaughters 11th birthday. The base is a 14×14 chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream icing. For the birds, I used Wilton’s Mini Wonder Mold Pan. I covered each of them with buttercream stars. The eyes, beaks and other features were made with fondant. I made the fondant pieces a couple of days earlier and put toothpicks in them so the would stick into the cake. You might be able to see the toothpicks I used to hold up some of the fondant pieces till just before serving the cake. Then I trimmed the cake with multi colored buttercream. She LOVED it!!
