I am so proud to share with you all my piece of work for ‘The Incredible India Collaboration’. Hope you like it.

My theme of the cake is Phulkari which literally means Flower work.
The Phulkari is a traditional art of crafting embroidered head drapes ( oudhini) used by women and is representative of the milestones in a women’s life differentiated by the colours intricate and yet simple and captures the ethos and spirit of social and ritualistic traditions. The phulkari is the traditional craftsmanship of Punjab.
While not native to the land (it was brought by migrant central Asian people), the craft was imbibed and internalized and passed on from generations onwards. The deeper connotations that resonate with the idea of incredible India are of being traditional and also modern, of being diverse, colourful and symbolic of the lifecycle of a women from birth to the last journey.
Specifically, my cake focuses on the phulkari which is linked to the marriage of the girl as she morphs from one avatar to another. The Cake has tried to capture the significant elements of the bridal trousseau.
Kalire umbrella shaped hangings signify happiness for the newlyweds and eternal love between the couple. The shape of the Kalire signifies that she doesn’t run out of food while the metal body symbolises wealth and prosperity.
Cowry shells are worn as ornaments and are viewed as symbols of womanhood, fertility, birth and wealth
Rice and the tradition of throwing the rice at the marriage ceremony signify the act of the bride repaying back to her parents and wishes for everlasting prosperity to flourish in the house she leaves behind.
