I got a chance to bake a cake for my niece’s wedding. The wedding was in Dhanbad (Jharkhand), 300 km from my hometown of Kolkata (West Bengal). As daunting as the task was, unavailability of equipment, shortage of time, weather conditions (humidity, power cuts), and lack of helping hands made it more difficult. Against all odds, I accepted the challenge because it was my niece’s wedding and an important family occasion. I had 2 days to come up with something special and unique. The wedding theme was Rajasthani so I decided to compliment the theme by incorporating Rajasthani puppets and using royal green golden colors with heavy borders. Wedding cakes are not traditionally used in weddings in Dhanbad and people were not accustomed to such big grand wedding cakes. However, this cake was very well received. Everyone loved the aesthetics and the flavor of the cake. It was encouraging to see my efforts come to fruition and the compliments made me proud of my work. This was the biggest challenge I ever faced and I can proudly say that I passed it with flying colors.
