Ok .. you know that one when you look in the fridge and get out all the leftovers, shove them in a pot, throw in a few chillies and call it ‘curry’? Well, that’s what this piece is! Mish-mashed together with leftovers from my birthday cakes (at a rather wild 60s/70s themed party!). The Beetle car had already had a chunk cut out of the front and made its way to Bristol with its happy owner so …. Plans A and B were both scrapped and Plan C was born at the eleventh hour.
This is summer in my mind, driving in my 1972 Clementine Beetle in the heat of Africa after a lazy summer day in the sticks, heading towards a brewing thunderstorm as the birds make haste and I can smell the hot rain on the horizon and hear the tinkling of chimes on the stoeps … a cold Castle Lager beckons and I long for the faint distant drums from the farmhands in the background while the rolls of thunder and flashes of lightning draw nearer…
And then I woke up … I miss my lovely Beetle, it was the first car I owned in UK. Cue violins ..
The VW Beetle is hand carved boozy fruit cake. The backdrop is an iced cakeboard, hand painted with edible colours. The flowers and wind chime are gumpaste (leftovers from my other birthday cake!). The cake board is iced with royal icing. They will both get washed and used again for another backdrop as usual!
This is a fun, sunny and happy collaboration, cheering up the never ending rainy skies that we have seen here in UK recently although the sun is blazing through the study window today, hooray!
Thank you so much to Isabel Tamargo for all your work in keeping us all together and making this so much fun!. Please do visit the album where you will see all the other awesome creations (208!).
Happy Summer Solstace to you all :)
