This was my contribution to the “Happy Birthday Stephen King” collaboration. It was an honor to work with such talented sugar artists from all over the world. Make sure to visit the official collaboration page to view all of the amazing pieces! www.facebook.com/HappyBirthdayStephenKing
This series holds a special place in my heart. Inspired by my husband, my very own Roland Deschain.
Being such a vast series it was difficult to decide on what to do. This cake sums it up without having to go into spoilers. Members of the Ka-tet will see the connections. ;)
Inspiration for the tower was sampled from several versions with my own spin. The opening of the tower reflects the cover of Book 7, “The Dark Tower” and the front bottom tier is from the first book, “The Gunslinger”. Even the font for the writing is the same as in his books. In total the cake is 27" tall. The tower is constructed of sculpted styrofoam that’s decorated with modeling chocolate and fondant with gumpaste windows, painted details, except the top one. It’s an edible image on a sugar sheet. I made a mold for the roses that are made of gumpaste. A little relief art on bottom from modeling chocolate and fondant. The scenery was airbrushed and figures placed afterwards, then painted with edible gels and powders. The cake board was a little tricky, but I got the hang of it about a 1/4 ways around. The lettering is on wafer paper.
