Harry Potter: Dobby The House-Elf

Harry Potter: Dobby The House-Elf

The moment Mitchie Curran invited me into the Birthday Mischief Managed collaboration I knew without a doubt that Dobby would be my subject. Dobby was a male house-elf who served the Malfoy family and was treated cruelly under their “care.” In The Chamber of Secrets Dobby disobeyed his owners by helping Harry Potter and as a result he would violently hurt himself. Eventually Harry tricks Lucious Malfoy by placing a dirty sock inside Tom Riddle’s Diary- a sock that he gives to Dobby in disgust, accidentally freeing him. A house-elf is freed when the owner hands him an article of clothing. Once free, socks became Dobby’s favorite article of clothing and he would collect colorful, mismatched socks. Dobby is a loveable character and without him Harry Potter and his friends would not have lived to defeat Voldemort. I sobbed through his death scene in The Deathly Hollows. For the project I wanted to capture the essence of his spirit and sculpted him holding his favorite items: a pair of mismatched socks, one sock a ruby color like her birth stone, as a birthday gift to J.K Rowling. The background shows him at the Owl Post ready to ship off his gift! Happy birthday, J.K Rowling!
