Up house cake

Up house cake

I made this cake for an upcoming cake competition. the house is all cake. Carved and frosted. The roof top was made by cutting out each piece of roofing. And the balloons are fondant with a very small portion of Styrofoam underneath it. A long pipe is screwed into the base of the board and coming out of the roof top so that the balloons are secured ontop of the cake. My mistakes with this cake.. 1) I did not know gelatin would not work well with buttercream or fondant. it sweats and then ruins.. essentially making my cake cry. 2). something went wrong with the bay window as soon as we got it to the competition. It was fine the entire week I was working on it, but then the 5th day it started to sag. The yellow side of the house or left side also buldged.. though it only started to do this on the 5th day as well. Unfortunately this was a competition piece and I cannot redo it for another competition because I don’t see how that would be fair. I did win 2nd place in the beginners division though.

Congrats on the win! I think you did an amazing job. If competitions by you are anything like the ones around my area you can fix and reenter this cake into another competition.

Where I am if you cake does not win 1st place you have a year from the date of the first competition to reenter your cake. You can leave it as is or make any necessary changes you like. I say fix what you are unhappy with and try again even though 2nd place is awesome.

thanks all.. Prima, it doesn’t sound like the competitions are the same here in Texas. I asked if I could redo it and it was highly frowned upon. I would love for someone to " need" this cake for a birthday. lol.
