I have been wanting to use lights on a cake for a long time. Then when I FINALLY got the chance to do a ‘Frozen’ cake, & the invitation they wanted to match featured swirling snowflakes, I knew it was perfect! I had been DYING to use the amazing Snowflake Swirls mat by Crystal Candy (here’s the link: http://www.crystalcandyusa.com/ourshop/prod_2978821-CakeArt-Platinum-Collection-Snowflake-Swirls.html), & I knew it would look AMAZING to backlight those gorgeous snowflakes. The detail on the mat & the finished snowflakes is exquisite, & the light really gave them an even more ethereal quality.
The cake is coated with sugar glitter to look like blue ice. This was my first time working with isomalt, also, & I made icicles & the ‘10’ topper from hand-pulled isomalt. I used rock candy for the other icicles. The picture of Elsa is an edible image mounted to a gumpaste backing & encased in clear isomalt to look like ice. The letters of the name are edible images on gumpaste, dipped in isomalt to give a ‘drippy’ ice effect.
The top tier is a ‘Chocolate Covered Strawberry’—-strawberry cake with white chocolate filling & dark chocolate ganache, at the special request of the birthday girl. The bottom tier is a Chocolate Sour Cream Pound cake with white chocolate buttercream swirled with salted caramel for the filling, & dark chocolate ganache.
