Chinese New Year Cake - Year of the Horse

Chinese New Year Cake - Year of the Horse

Wanted to attempt something different than I’ve done before and this is the result. I envisioned the cake from the perspective of floating along with it in the air amongst a whole company of lanterns.

The lantern itself is a wafer paper creation, structured with spaghetti to keep it 100% edible. It rests on top of a 4″ × 7″ tall chocolate cake, elevated above the board to simulate floating. Also underneath is a small battery operated flickering candle to light the lantern from the inside.

The backboard is fondant covered foam board, 30″ × 25.5″, and airbrushed to show the lanterns high in the sky just past dusk. My goal was to make both the lantern cake and the background lanterns glow. All pictures were taken at night to give the full effect.

If you’d like to see what the light looks like as it flickers underneath as well as a bit more about the structure, you can watch the video on youtube here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbMEZrPLqEo
