Sugarveil

I used sugarveil for the first time last weekend. I found it quite easy to do.

Fix mix as per the instructions. I left this to sit for about 1/2 hour and then i was eager to use it.

Lay your mat on a flat board as it will be easier to move to leave it somewhere to dry.

When you are ready give the sugarveil a bit of a stir as it goes sort of “marshmallowy” once its been sitting.

Scoop a bit out onto your mat using a spatula, then using the spatula (i found this easier than the big sugarveil scraper) move the sugarviel around making sure you are filling the mat going in all directions, use the flat edge of the spatula to scrap over the mat in little sections then you can see if you have any gaps, scrape off any excess.
Once you are happy with it, take the big sugarveil scraper and carefully (not too firmly) put it back over the mat.

Leave the sugarveil to dry – it can take a good couple of hours.

Once it is not sticky, with a damp cloth very carefully rub over the sugarveil as this removes any little excesses still left, leave this to dry for about an hour and then you are ready to remove it.

Get a piece of greaseproof paper and then turn the mat over, very gently release the first edge of the mat until you have about 1 – 2 cm, then you can use the big scraper to hold the edges down whilst gently pulling the mat back.

I use greaseproof top and bottom to store my sugarveil between in a sealable plastic bag, keeping it flat..

I found it was very easy to colour with gel colour paste and have so far made white, red, black and pink!

Marshmallow Fondant

So, today I finally got to play at making some Marshmallow Fondant, I used 8oz Mini Marshmallows, 1lb Icing Sugar, 2 Tblespoon water.

Added the water to the marshmallows and microwaved for 1 minute on high, whilst they were melting I smoothered a wooden spoon in Trex, once out of the microwave mixed till nice and smooth, then started to mix in the icing sugar (which was hard going towards the end) once I had encorporated most of the icing sugar, i turned it out onto a well covered board with icing sugar and started kneading, you will need plenty! once the mix had almost stopped being sticky, I rubbed some Trex into my hands and covered the board with cornflour and then kneaded this until smooth, I have now wrapped it in clingfilm ready to use later!

Very easy to do although a little time consuming – tastes good tho :) this made just over 800 g in weight

Character Cakes Copyright

I have been a hobby cake decorator for years and have made cakes for friends and family as favors, my Gruffalo cake was for a friend and so was the van, copyright didnt even enter my head when i made them as i wasnt selling them.

This year i have decided to do it as a business and have been getting everything i need ready. One of the things i have been looking into lately is copyright.

Do you even realise that you need permission to re-create well known characters into icing to put onto a cake to sell it?

I started emailing around – Moshi Monsters were happy for me to re-create their characters and logo as long as it wasnt for mass production.

HIT Entertainment (who cover characters like Bob the Builder/Postman Pat/Thomas the Tank) say no unless you have a licence.

DISNEY – so far have received no response.

So when my cake business is fully up and running – I will be saying no to making character cakes, which is a pity but i dont want to breech copyright and get into trouble!
