My crazy life in cake and Dora

197 days ago by cakesbynadia | 2 comments »

I love receiving feedback from customers…. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Bring it on…... I like to hear it all. Of course I like a glowing report as much as the next person but I also need to know if something is not right!!! Truly, I’m not worried that someone is going to tell me that the cake was the worst thing that they have ever tasted. I have made enough cakes now to know that this is not my area of concern ….... what I do worry about is that someone may mentio...

Up late decorating...

208 days ago by simplycakes | 1 comment »

I just finished my goal for tonight on my baby shower birch tree cake…I know most birch tree cakes are for weddings but this client wanted a Camouflage cake and I didn’t want it too look cheesy or for a proper word “Redneck”, so I thought the birch tree would be perfect to keep it classy. In the morning I need to attach all the pine cones, leaves and pine needles. I must say im already in love with it. Everything was hand painted and love love how it came out for my fi...

Patterns inside a cake

209 days ago by Karmarie | 26 comments »

I have seen other tutorials on this “Patterns inside a cake” technique but I didn’t know the importance of making the inside image tight if you want each piece to reflect a perfect image. My husband thought up this idea and it works great! I baked a pink cake and cut a small wedge to cut my piece out of. This is all the pieces.. see how they are wedge shaped? This allows for a tight image. Now place the hearts upside down in a small pool of cake mix. I u...

Second wedding cake

214 days ago by simplycakes | 1 comment »

So excited about my second wedding cake order! I love making wedding cakes even though they are time consuming, I find piping to be a true love for me. For this cake the bride wanted simple ivory buttercream cake, piping, and roses cascading down the side, which i just finished making plus the filler flowers and leaves! I could make flowers all day…I cant wait on my next wedding cake due in January. Hopefully ill get another booking for one before then :) Till then ill count my blessing...

The TORTA method for ganaching a cake

215 days ago by tortacouture | 26 comments »

This tutorial is the technique that I came up with that made it easier for me to make sure that I got straight even sides and a completely flat top every time I ganached a cake. The technique I came up with is kind of a mix of the upside down method that everyone knows about and the technique used by Faye Cahill where she uses two boards (one on top and one on bottom) to help ganache her cakes. My technique as I say is a mix of both and hopefully you find it helpful. There are many way...

Alice in Wonderland - The making of the characters

217 days ago by KerriesKreations | 0 comments »

Hi, I’m a new cake maker and have just created my first real cake – an Alice in Wonderland 3 tier topsy turvy cake, covered in wonderful fondant characters, including Alice, White Rabbit, Queen of Hearts… (view here—> http://cakesdecor.com/cakes/32594) I made a few mistakes along the way, including poking some toothpicks through characters heads, failing at making white toffee in the first instance etc. I’m hoping that by sharing my blog on how I made ...

Competition cake chronicles

238 days ago by Karen Flude | 1 comment »

This week I’ve been starting to put together the cake and characters I’ve been working on over the last few weeks. When I build a cake from my imagination I have to listen to the story the characters are telling me, and that sets the scene for the finished cake. My Mother always said I had an over active imagination. But I suppose thats how Authors write books sometimes. They have to let the story tell itself and when it’s done they can “picture” the story. ...

Greatest Fear :O

251 days ago by Joyce Nimmo | 10 comments »

As a cake decorator my greatest fear is to miss spell (yep, on purpose) the writing on a cake (and not notice in time to fix it)!!! What’s your greatest cake decorating fear?
