a totally different way of decorating cakes…not very commercial but looking pretty on my cherry wood table in my living room

Once again pink and freehand royal icing piped white and silver details for Maria’s 18th birthday…!

once again for the pleasure of a baroque-loving couple….the sicilian taste! Handpiped flowers on royal icing piping. Gumpaste bows and roses on the top.

I made this cake in honour of Tornatore’s “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso” and his co-star Totò Cascio who played the little boy’s role and now lives in my neighbour village (he is 36 now).

Actually, I was commissioned to do it by the italian Cake Design Magazine and I really wish that this cake could help to remember a part of our parent’s story and life.

I was particularly impressed by the giant anchors on the shore… meaning “to be anchored” which were referring to one’s boundage to the own native land and Alfredo (the projectionist) saying to the young man “Go, go away! This is a cursed land!” These words helped the young man to go away to Rome where he later became a famous director.

I loved the idea of doing some kind of elegant vintage boxes (I think people here are more impressed by shiny gold effects than by a dusty looking antique finish..Ok…I must admit that I forgot in the rush of the morning to brush some brown dust on the borders and edgings…) The cake was for a 50 anniversary and fed about 100 peoples. I loved most doing the scroll and blossom piping on the bottom case. It was ispired from the embroidery on the veil of their wedding anniversary favours.

This was a nice solution for a friend of mine who’s son turned 18. He is a football player in Palermo (Sicily- ITaly) and they basically wanted a large and broad cake to slice easily. The cake had to travel for a good while, too. I prepared a sheetcake for the base which was for about 60/70 people, so I didn’t want to put some modelling on it as they would have looked too tiny on the large surface. And …I was eager to shape a shark cake, and a football cake…and so on…Honestly, I don’t really like that kind of flat cakes and I’m sure it would have turned out much more interesting if it was designed on more levels. But, however, time is time and your point of view is just a matter of opinion…finally, they liked it, and that’s important, too!

I had never heard about this cartoon before, but…my kids are experts and taught me about every detail! :)

My sencond time Merida for a cousin…Merida’s arc and her hair took a good while but the shades and the cake decoration were funny and easy and quick to do.

thanks to Zaira who allowed me to make an owl cake…which is not very common for Sicily…

Finally a quite elaborated cake (topper) for my OWN daughter whose party was yesterday afternoon with about 20 fairies flying around my living-room….I’m definitely k.o. and there’s still a lot of work with…”post-production” waiting for me: I have to clean up the mess! Have a nice day, folks! :)

Here’s a very strange request I had to struggle with. I was first commissioned a cake for a birthday that turned later on into an Easter Cake ! This is the softer version of the original idea (I had been asked to do a cake with a motorbike and a boar and a rabbit sitting on it….and on the bottom all 4 Beatles singing and playing their instruments…After I said that all 4 Beatles would have been too much work they suggested to do two motorbikes and 4 animals….OH no, that was even worse!!! But, I had somehow to impress them with my cake…so this is how it turned out….in my last Easter night!

Just an idea for Women’s day: poppies and mimosa, two flowers and two colours full of significance for women’s history. The cake is coated and decorated in royal icing.
