This cake was created for a writer. The brief was a book and quill but I expanded on the idea to personalise it a little more by creating glasses similar to those owned by Avril, a pink cockatoo coffee cup (or tea cup style as it turned out to be as the first coffee mug I created looked clunky and odd) and adding a few of her favourite bikkies. I also painted the text on the page to spell out MUM. The cake was huge too, created from two 7” x 11” x 4” cakes and a tonne of dark choc ganache! Everything is handcrafted and 100% edible – aside from the base board…! Thanks for looking!

Half was Choc Oreo Cookies’n’Cream, the other half Classic Choc all covered in dark choc ganache then fondant and gumpaste details. The only inedible items on the board are the dowels in the stick part of the fondant clubs… If that makes sense!

Such a simple idea and SO effective! If creating a perfect dome on a delicate icing like SMBC really does your head in then I can’t recommend this product enough. They worked perfectly, I imprinted/stencilled or simply cut my fondant rounds then smoothed them over the half sponge sphere, added any additional decorations and let dry. Too easy :)

The actual design did my head in for a bit – I’m so not great with angles! Surprisingly the stripes just seemed to sort themselves out nice and cleanly so was well. The font was hand cut and the glitter ball topper had a styro core. Thanks for looking!

Leopard and Quilted tier cake

This cake was a first for a number of things:

Quilting: so much easier than I expected – I used an embossing mat to gently indent the markings then followed the lines to make a deeper impression with a scribing tool.

Leopard print: I sprayed a white fondant base with gold wilton lustre in a haphazard fashion, then hand painted random dots/uneven circles in brown and outlined in black – both with Americolour gel colours diluted with vodka

Ribbon Roses: folded fondant strip then rolled up, pinching randomly as you go.

The colour combination disappointed me a little but purple is just so dang difficult to make in a deep shade!! Anyone have any tips for home colouring purple or any recommendations on a deep purple pre-coloured fondant brand?

Thanks for looking :)

Topsy Turvy Cowgirl Cake

This cake was recreated from an image my client sent me with only a few minor alterations – I tracked the picture down to a design by Pink Cake Box. The topper was inspired from the birthday invitation. This has been my smallest Topsy Turvy creation yet which was a nice reprieve! These tiers are 9”, 7” and 5” with varying flavours. All filled with SMBC and finished in ganache then fondant. Previously I have always tapered my bases by 2” but this time I only did 1” and I much prefer the look. Plus it’s so much more stable for this ridiculous Autumn weather we are having here in rural Victoria, Australia (constant 30c plus). Bring on Winter!!!

Was a little worried about the bow staying put as it has no base support but with a skewer and a bit of RI it was solid as a rock. Thanks for looking :)

This cake was created for a sweet little girl turning 1 – the Daddy’s Little Girl theme was just too cute! The pink camo was created with a base pink fondant then exacto knifing random blobs of black, green and dark pink from very thin fondant and pasting them on. Next time I’d like to try and figure out an easier way! The deer was modelled from gumpaste.

The last pic shows how I dried the fondant bow. These are 2 pieces of drinking water pipe that my hubby cut down and neatened up for me. Cut with a nice flat bottom they were able to stand up and support the bow in its shape while it dried. I discovered this technique from a very clever youtube tutorial by the awesome Marsha Winbeckler – CakesSuppliesPlus.com

The cakes are both 8” and finished with an ombre petal ruffle technique (my first time and I LOVED the effect!) and gumpaste glitter number 1. I was so pleased that they turned out pretty much identical!

It’s a square topsy turvy which even though it’s a single tier, the shape is still quite effective. I originally wanted to create the pier purely from sugar, but the fisherman turned out to be too heavy so the pier has a cardboard base. The wave technique I came across when I first discovered cake decorating – I remember thinking, ‘Oh, I’m so going to try that one day’ and lo and behold I actually remembered to do so! Overall, this cake was just so much fun and a bit hard to part with come collection time. Thanks for looking :)

The first time the 3rd tier was styro but this all cake and rainbow layered ones if I remember correctly. All filled with SMBC then finished in ganache and fondant. All the characters are gumpaste and modelled using techniques learned from the awesome Elmo tutorial by Raewyn of CakesbyRaewyn. Cheers Rae x

This cake was created from a 8” half sphere and 2×4” cakes carved to shape. All cakes are white choc mud filled with white choc buttercream and coated in white choc ganache. The design is replicated from an image supplied by the client. This was my first time creating zebra print and was surprised by how easy and effective it looks. Looking forward to another! Thanks for looking :)

The decorations are gumpaste and edible images. The holes in the front bumper and designed to hold mini LED lights. Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture with them in. Thanks for looking!
