Black or Red You decide

I was asked to make this cake to help celebrate an 80th birthday. Even at 80, the birthday girl is still very fashion conscious and wearing heels! It is a 6” vanilla cake with lemon frosting and an 8” chocolate cake with strawberry frosting covered in MMF. The bottom tier was then stenciled with royal icing (my first time). The accessories were all handcrafted from either mexican paste or gum paste. The client took the cake with the black purse on top. I can’t decide which one I like better, black or red.

She is without question one of my most favorite people ever and this cake completely represents her! It is an 8” double barrel chocolate cake covered with MMF. The pattern on the side was done with sugar sheets and a Martha Stewart scrapbook punch. Couture Cakes by Rose did a small tutorial on the method but I’ve seen it done somewhere else as well. The flowers were made with modelling chocolate and the accessories were made with mexican sugar paste. A special thank you to Jessica Harris and her wonderful craftsy class.

LOL. this is a 7” orange cake with orange buttercream covered in homemade marshmallow fondant (MMF) and decorated with fondant/modelling chocolate flowers. the robin is made from fondant. I made this cake as a way to try out a bunch of tricks and ideas I picked up in Jessica Harris’s new Craftsy class and for my birthday as well. Basically I wanted something spring like that made me smile! Thank you for looking (and think spring!)

It’s an 8” vanilla bean cake with caramel buttercream and milk chocolate ganache decorated in fondant. The letters are fondant covered in ruby red disco dust. The small mirror and the bow on Snow White’s head band were done using Martha Stewart molds. For the large frame, I made a mold from a picture frame and then made an edible frame from fondant. From there I embellished it with sugar pearls and gold lustre dust. The mirror was made from melted Jolly Ranchers. It didn’t turn out as well as I was hoping, but it was effective. the figure was also hand sculpted from fondant. I made two versions of her head, one with a full face the other with only eyes. My daughter insisted on the full faced figure for the cake.

I just knew I had to combine the two ideas! This cake stood over 2’ high and made a lovely centerpiece. The cake is a 3 tier (4”, 6”, 10”) funfetti and chocolate cake covered in fondant balloons with hand sculpted Winnie the Pooh and Piglet figures. I approached this cake a little differently than Brenda did and took several pictures along the way. I have them posted on my facebook page.

I also created 4” Winnie the Pooh sugar cookie party favours for the guests to take home as a thank you for attending the shower.

Down in the garden

This is a 13×9” quarter slab carrot cake covered in cream cheese buttercream and fondant. The trees, bushes and pond are made with RKTs covered in fondant. The trees were then dusted with 3 or 4 shades of green to add some dimension. The pond water was done with a sparkling gel. The cake is completely edible.

While this is my own design, I did take a lot of inspiration from a couple of cakes by Lesley over at the Royal Bakery, and did a lot of brainstorming with my friend Jennifer.

This fondant topper is based on a piece of artwork by suisei-ojii-sama that depicts the Disney Princesses. This is my 3D fondant version of the Cinderella found on that poster. It stands approximately 5 1/2 inches tall.
