Whoop my first blog entry!! What shall I write about? Shall I bore you with useless information about how I stumbled upon cakey making? Yes, I think I shall :D
I have been surrounded by craftly folk all my life! My Grandma’s, Mum, Auntie Karen and cousins. For as long as I can remember, arts and crafts have been the main constant hobby while growing up. My earliest memories are of me and my cousin making plaster shell pictures, pom poms, quilled cards and just gluing and sticking anything we could find to make a collage! I loved art at school but never had the confidence to feel ‘good’ at it! I stopped crafting between the ages of 16 and 22, then took up card making! I loved it and made everything from birthday cards to wedding stationery.
In 2008/9 I took up jewellery making – the beads became my addiction! I loved the colours, textures and different styles I could create with a little imagination.
My latest passion came about after becoming hooked on programmes like Cupcake Wars, Mich Turners Masterclass, Cake Boss and Ace of Cakes. I loved watching the techniques used to make edible creations and I was itching to have a go.
In April 2011, I started experimenting with cupcake flavours, fillings and topping techniques. Neighbours, friends and family gave glowing reports! Without proper equipment, I made my sons 1st birthday cake in June and by August, had a mini stash of cutters and fondant colours!
On 27th September 2011 (Grandma Broadley’s birthday!), I set up my page Sugar Mummy Cupcakes on Facebook tk showcase my makes. It soon snowballed into a business page and by December 2011 people were asking me to make them cupcakes, with my first big cake order being taken in January 2012.
I absolutely love creating cakes and my skills and techniques are constantly being improved upon. I have learnt so much in a short space of time, and I’ve still heaps to learn. Watch this space xxx
