Aha! Yes, unfortunately sometimes the people we know (who should know better!) think they can say things like that. How rude! Since you know her, I would politely tell her how rude her comment was and that she has no idea how much time and energy goes into making a cake, let alone the cost of all the tools needed, ingredients and utilities! I would make sure to charge her full price if ever she orders from you. NO mates rates for this one!

It’s a fruit cake with brandy etc… so I was charging £30…...What do you think?

I had something similar happen to me. A friend asked me if I could make here a giant cupcake and what’s the cheapest price I could do it for so I told her I’d do it for £30 bearing in mind I usually charge £45 and she stood there open mouthed and said ‘How much???’ She was gobsmacked and said she’d ask her sister to make a cake instead. I was so hurt! People really have no idea what goes into making an amazing cake, they think its as simple as throwing a few ingredients in a bowl, shoving it in the oven and 20 minutes later out it pops fully decorated and packaged.

Bezmeralda…a giant cup cake for 30 pounds!!! And she thought that was expensive??? What a cheek!!! I think you had a lucky escape, bet her sisters was nothing like what you would have done!
Kerry, I don’t make fruitcake as I can’t stand the smell of the all spice so I buy mine from our fabulous baker if I get a request for one. I recently paid $80 for an 8” undecorated fruit cake!!! And that’s wholesale!!! Fruit cakes are terribly expensive, let alone the time and expense of decorating them. Don’t worry about this person…and if it was me, I’d cross her off my Christmas card list haha! :) x
