SNOT ROD 3D Carved Birthday Cake Modeled on a character from the animated movie CARS

This was such a fun cake to make…. it was my first attempt to at creating a ‘car cake’ ...my little nephew Tye absolutely loves the movie and I thought I would be making one of the more well know characters such as Mater or Lightning McQueen but no Tye’s favorite is SNOT ROD who only makes a very brief appearance in the movie but it must be a memorable one as this was the cake he firmly requested !!!
SNOT ROD (what a name !!) appears in a scene where he sneezes and flames shoot out from his side exhausts so I put sparkler candles behind the sugar paste flames to hopefully get that effect when the candles were lit.
Little Tye’s reaction was wonderful when I dropped the cake off to him, he was adorable checking out all the details…. I didn’t get to go to the party as I had to work but I received wonderful feedback and although the candles were hard to light at first it actually all worked and created the flame effect well enough to impress the little ones !!!

Love Seat Wedding Cake

This was a cake I made for dear friends of my husband and I ‘Melissa and Jeremy’. As far as everyone knew they were planning their engagement party but a small few of us knew it was going to be much more than that….as everyone arrived at their home on Saturday they were welcomed by the most beautifully decorated wedding venue that was obviously going to be more than an engagement party !!!! it turned out to be most incredibly beautiful wedding which I felt so thrilled to be a part of.s
When they had initially asked me to make their cake they only had one request and that was that they liked the quirky idea of Jeremy having a ball and chain around his ankle …. well this is just the kind of challenge I like and as they basically gave me a free rein with the rest of making it this cake was great fun.
Melissa told me that she would be carrying a bouquet of pale pink and cream roses so i thought that by making these and a sugar paste love seat it would give the quirky characters a softer more romantic feel and with the help of a few pics from the bride of her dress and accessories I created my version of the newly Weds !!! of course in real life they are a million times better looking but as much as handcrafting icing allows I think I captured enough of their likeness for the guests to know who it was on the top of the cake when they walked in and that they definitely weren’t at an engagement party !!!!
The actual tiers were 8, 10 and 12 inch Chocolate Mud cakes and every bit of the figures were handcrafted out of sugar paste.

This fun cake was a request from a friend of the family who’s husband was turning fifty…she told me how Brett was a West Coast Eagles fan and loved Golf and fishing….oh and not forgetting his other passion of Vintage Holden cars ( hence the reading material ) !!! This was a fairly large cake that took one 11inch 2×9 inch and one 6inch round mud cakes to form the shape … all the decorations are edible and handcrafted in Sugarpaste.

Mickey & Minnie 3D Mud cake with Disney friends and edible images.

This was the first time I’d attempted a Disney themed cake and I must say it was certainly a challenge to make such large characters in actual cake. The board was 90cm in length and you can kind of get an idea of scale from the rear view photo.
It has been extremely hot here in Western Australia so I added extra cmc to help with keeping everything upright lol but the down side is it made the icing more prone to cracking.
Mickey & Minnie’s heads were sculpted out of rice bubbles and marshmallow ….. they did become fairly heavy so I required some pretty serious supports in their bodies as the cake had to travel nearly an hour in the car and last thing I wanted was for heads to roll !!!!
The cake arrived safely at little Olivia’s first Birthday celebrations and the cake and the guests survived the sweltering heat as the mercury past 40 degrees that day but being held at the beautiful Mullaloo Beach Park the sea breeze helped keep things a little cooler.
Being held in a public place I was so proud to have total strangers come up and ask if they could take a closer look at the cake…it’s such a joy to see the children s faces and even though this cake certainly saw me burning the midnight oil I left the party feeling very happy that I’d managed to create what Donna ( Olivia’s Mum) had requested and it had worked !!!!

This cake is dear to me for a few reasons, it was one of the first big cakes I made since starting cake decorating classes last February and it was made for my beautiful daughter Ashton who requested herself to be placed in the magical Alice in wonderland theme for her special birthday cake. Back then I did have a little more time on my hands and I can say it’s one of the most enjoyable cakes I’ve made :)
