This was inspired by a classic design of Peggy Does Cake. My cousi wanted a very girly, very pink cake for a friend on her 18th Birthday. She said think of Barbie and princesses and you can’t go wrong. I instantly thought of Peggy’s fantastic cake. I asked Peggy if she minded and in her words she said @don’t be stupid Gary, of course you can, no need to ask’. I decided to add a few of my own ideas though as I do not like to blatently copy. So instead of rolled roses i opted for petal roses and I played with the colours of the ties as well. My cousin was very happy and even better I got the thumbs up from Peggy too. Thanks Peggy x

Twinkle Twinkle

I was asked to make a Christening cake by a friend for her daughter. When I asked what she had in mind she said nothing as she was leaving it all up to me. She trusted me 100% to come up with something special for little daughter’s special day. First reaction from me was to panic, Second was to start planning! I rememberd seeing a design for a similar cake in a magazine 1-2 years ago so i rooted it out. 2 problems. 1 no airbrush kit and 2 the original cake design was in blue. So back to the drawing board I went. I then decided to take aspects from that design and place them with a few design ideas of mine. I wanted the evening star to shine next to the moon. The clouds, I decided, to be 3D fluffy white with aspects of pink. I wanted it to look sleepy and dreamy. My wife said it reminded her of Ice Cream!

When My friend came to collect she loved it and happened to say that they sing Twinkle Twinkle to their little girl every night before bedtime. Makes it all worthwhile!

No ideas from him as to what he wanted other than it must look great! I decided to design the cake around the concept of a stack of presents. He did give me her favorite colours so it was easy to design that part. I opted for a classic Zebra print on the bottom and a modern Zebra print on pink for the top. the middle tier was sheer bling!

A collegue from work approached me about making her wedding cake. When I asked what she had in mind, I shuddered! Red and Silver was her theme, as it would match her Sari and the wedding stage that she and her husband to be were getting married on. I decided that if the cakes were to be red then they should also have silver on them to break up the huge amount of red. I attached silver dragees (silver balls) and silver coated chocolate buttons then I draped silver coloured paste ribbon and bows around each tier. I bought 3 silver and red glass brooches to complete the design. The bride also wanted 20 matching cupcakes for some of the children attending. I took the 3 types of quilting effects from the main cakes and transferred them to the cupcakes, so they all matched.

It’s a design favorite for little girls it seems in my neck of the woods. I really enjoy making Minnie and Mickey cakes like this, something about modelling the head that is so satisfying. I use RKT to mold the shape of the head, nose and mouth and then when it’s just right I cover in modelling paste. Jenni really enjoyed her cake as did Mum and all who went to her party.

He plays a lot of football (soccer) and in his spare time acts as a referee for other matches. He has a new pair of boots which are his pride and joy. My Sister sent me many pics of the boots so that I could re-create them in cake. I opted to have one boot on top of the box, which is sitting on my nephew’s football shirt. I was at one point going to have 2 boots but they were so difficult to get just right I booted out that Idea (pardon my bad joke) and baked another cake to decorate as the shoe box. Smiles all round when I presented it to him!

I told my customer that I would be happy to take the original as inspiration and to recreate with some minor changes. Not that it would enhance the original or make it better, as you can’t improve on the original masterpiece, but simply because I do not like to copy outright. I changed the skirt slightly so that it was raised at the front and draped around either side of the cake. I loved doing the Disney writing, it’s so simple with a paste gun. The customer was thrilled with the result. Even had the Royal Bakery thumbs up too on facebook.

My good Friend Lesley from Royal Bakery had made two superhero cakes a few months ago using images from Hedbonstudios as inspiration, which i decided to also try. They have loads of images superheroes and celebrities all drawn in a cute chubby kind of fashion. I took a few images of Batman and kind of merged them into what became my final model. Obviously every Batman cake has to have the utility belt and cape as well as the logo. I opted for a city backdrop on the top tier also. I really enjoyed modelling this little guy but I must have made at least 5 heads before I was happy.

The customer wanted a lavish 3 tier for her 7year old in the Style of Choccywoccydoodah (a British cake boutique). What I gave them was inspired by their lavish chocolate designs. I also added a fake (dummy) tier and tried my hand at billowing. I really enjoyed the design of this cake as it really tested me until the final star and rose was placed. It was a gamble that paid off as when the lady came to collect she burst into tears of joy, thank goodness.
