This is a building cake that was asked to create as a surprise for an architect’s 40th birthday. It’s an iconic building in south Manchester, UK, especially those who are/have been students in the city. It is actually called The Hollings building but has been nicknamed The Toast Rack and the round building next door is The Fried Egg. I simplified the numbers of windows slightly but was particularly keen to recreate the floating “loops”, which I was particularly pleased with :)

I decided to make it a little bit fun by using purple swags to match the logo, and white ruffles to add a cuteness factor. The chef buy is stirring a big bowl of purple mixture. Inside, the cake is zesty lemon.

Vogue Vintage Couture

This is my competition entry for The Cake and Bake Show, which came to town this weekend. The theme was Vintage Couture for the Cakes on the Catwalk show so I chose a 1926 Vogue painted front cover as my inspiration. The cake has strings of pearls and draped/knotted pearls, a red tasseled scarf with hand painted gold details, silver roses (I made them 3D rather than the painted designs on the lady’s scarf), a sapphire bracelet (around the base of the cake) and lilac fringes to represent the flapper dress. I also tried to bring in the dark blue sky element in the half height tier.

The cake had to be real and the delivery window was tiny so I pre-stacked everything and nearly killed myself carrying it from the car to the catwalk. Three pit stops and a lot of grumbling later, and it arrived intact. Unfortunately it didn’t win anything and despite the red, I don’t think many people noticed it (it was in a weird, hidden position) but I was proud of my novel colour scheme and well thought out inspiration and reasoning. It’s nice to do something a little crazy and different sometimes :)

Hope you find it interesting, anyway! xx

I kept the palette simple with pastels: vanilla, dusky pink and duck egg blue. There are ruffles, raw silk texture and piped lace, finished off with a very simple sugar bow.

Approximately 1 metre wide, designed to replicate the wedding venue, with a request that the ground floor windows lit up at night. I kept the landscaping simple to show off the details on the building.

This six tier cake was created for a lovely couple getting married in a grand hall near Liverpool, UK, The tiers were in ivory with varying heights and two different shapes. I replicated their stationery design in gold, hand painting the swirls and scrolls on each tier, and their initials on a plaque. The flowers matched the bride’s selection for her bouquet, including David Austin roses, lisianthus and hydrangea blossoms. The cake had quite a vintage feel, and the couple decorated the cake table with old family photos of weddings through the decades.

I created a cascade of ruffled roses with graded colour from deep turquoise in the centre, through ice blue and with white petals on the edges. Inside, the cake was a classic Madagascan vanilla on the base and chocolate marble cake on the top.

The couple’s colour scheme was purple, which I brought out in the ranunculus, hydrangea blossoms and calla lilies, but the bride was also having some pink Faith roses in her bouquet so I created these spiraling centred roses to match. I also mirrored details from the couple’s stationery with the two birds and the heart-shaped motif at the base.

The theme started off as a joke, because he is renowned for his beard, thick woolly jumpers and dark glasses…and it just grew from there! The main cake was a stylized version of the birthday boy, and the cake pops and cookies mirrored the jumper and glasses theme.
