LV Purse Cake

Just finished this pink LV purse cake. The cake is lemon with lemon buttercream and raspberry jam, covered in fondant. All decor is hand made and edible. The cake is a gift to a lady who is now vegan, but loved to collect LV purses in her pre-gan days, hence the “loving vegan” tag at the top. The cake board is covered in fondant and the leopard print is hand painted. The LV pattern is all handcut too, and I really underestimated how long that was going to take. Just to do the pattern took about 6 hours total. The “LV” logo is painted on. I used a mold for the zipper and chain on the side (really easy: buy some Amazing Mold putty, a new zipper and a chain and make your own). The cake is also massively huge at 14” long, 4” deep and 9” tall (not including the height of the handles). I padded the front so that it would look more like fabric and less rigid—meaning the ripple in the middle is intentional and not a result of saggy fondant.

Please excuse the yucky background… the cake was so big and delicate that I didn’t want to move it to my light tent and risk a caketastropy!

Thanks for looking!

Ugly Zombie Cupcake

Just for fun, I thought I’d post this cupcake that I submitted to an ugly cupcake contest and won. I’ve been dying to make a zombie cake for a long time and that’s what I wanted to do for this ugly cupcake. When I googled “ugly zombie” the first image that pops up is one of a zombie hamster, which was perfect inspiration! Since it’s made from cupcakes, it’s probably near life size, right?!

Anyway, I took one cupcake and leveled it. Then took 2 more cupcakes and stacked them on top (so it’s like a 3-tier cupcake) and that’s how I carved the face. I then covered the head in fondant and used gel coloring to add some dimension to the “skin.” The hair is cotton candy that I stuck on with water.

CuriOdyssey Cake

My client was hosting her daughter’s fifth birthday party at CuriOdyssey (http://www.curiodyssey.org/) and wanted a cake that reflected the party location. CuriOdyssey is a very cool place in San Mateo, CA that’s a museum with kid-sized exhibitions and a small zoo with animals that have been rescued/rehabilitated and aren’t able to return to the wild (many of the animals are native to California). The birthday girl wanted an “animal theme” for her cake and the birthday mom sent me this cake for inspiration: http://cakecentral.com/gallery/1781787/happy-little-farm. Specifically, she liked the frog and wanted to include one holding a heart like in the photo and she wanted some of the animals at CuriOdyssey featured on the cake (badger, coyote, owl, bobcat, frog, duck, birds, etc). CuriOdyssey also has this insanely cool bee exhibit and we wanted to include some bees on the cake as well.

The tricky part for me was trying to figure out a way to incorporate that many animals into a small-ish (9”) cake without it looking cluttered. Then I saw a photo roll by on Facebook and decided to throw the tree in to anchor everything together. For the life of me, I can’t remember who made the cake that inspired the tree in my cake here. If anyone knows, please leave a comment and I’ll link to it (it was a Valentine themed cake that had a tree on top and a girl sitting on a swing hanging from one of the branches—so adorable!).

This cake is a vegan chocolate cake with chocolate filling. Everything is handmade and edible.
